Rumah Sakit Gajah Dibangun di Way Kambas

SUKADANA, KOMPAS.com — Rumah sakit atau klinik khusus gajah mulai dibangun di areal Taman Nasional Way Kambas (TNWK). Pembangunan fasilitas khusus perawatan gajah ini melibatkan TNWK, Australian Zoo, dan Pusat Konservasi Taman Safari Indonesia.
Peletakan batu pertama pembangunan rumah sakit gajah yang disebut-sebut bakal menjadi terbesar di Asia Tenggara ini dilakukan oleh Menteri Kehutanan Zulkifli Hasan, Selasa (31/1/2012).
Hadir pula Program Development Manager Australian Zoo, Laurie Pond, dan Direktur Taman Safari Tony Sumampau. Pembangunan rumah sakit gajah seluas 600 meter persegi ini akan memakan waktu dua tahun.
Selain berisi istal atau klinik perawatan gajah, di fasilitas yang pembangunannya dibiayai Australian Zoo ini akan terdapat fasilitas laboratorium dan penyimpanan pakan gajah.
Menhut Zulkifli Hasan menyambut baik pembangunan RS gajah ini. "Mudah-mudahan tahun ini bisa selesai. Ini merupakan bagian untuk mendukung program pelestarian gajah yang dilindungi dan kini masuk (status) apendiks 1," tuturnya.
